AI Usage Policy
Policy on the use of artificial intelligence and technologies supporting it
Editorial policy of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and technologies supporting it is based on the CEUR-WS Policy on AI Support Tools .
Generative AI can support the writing process, but it should never replace it. AI should be used responsibly.
This is the editorial policy of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " on the use of artificial intelligence aims to be transparent about how authors, reviewers and editors should approach generative AI (hereinafter referred to as GenAI) tools when writing articles and preparing them for publication in a collection. Editorial Board of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " will continue to monitor the development of such technologies and reserves the right to update this policy as necessary.
If you, as an author, use GenAI tools to write your text, they should only support you in preparing and improving your presentation, and not perform the main tasks of creating a scientific text for you. Tasks such as formulating scientific conclusions, interpreting results, or developing recommendations should be performed by human authors. In this regard, the editorial board of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " insists on:
- Declaring the use of GenAI tools in an article. This declaration helps maintain trust and transparency in relations with readers and ensures compliance with the terms of use of the relevant tools. This policy applies only to new content (after it enters into force), and not to previously published work.
- Review and edit any AI-generated content. Simply copying and pasting generated content is not allowed, as it may contain errors or bias. Ultimately, you, as the author of the manuscript, are responsible for its content.
- Failure to identify AI tools as authors. The scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " publishes original works created by human authors. Authorship implies responsibility, including ensuring accuracy and integrity, which AI assistants cannot fulfill. The contribution of GenAI tools should be disclosed in a special section of the manuscript and, if desired, properly reflected in the references in the original scientific articles.
The editorial board of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " requires that all authors and editors adhere to these guidelines. Violation of these guidelines will result in retraction (withdrawal) of the published article, similar to the procedures we apply in cases of plagiarism.
Acceptable and unacceptable use cases
Below are examples of acceptable use of GenAI in publications in the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security ", as well as exceptions under which such use would be considered unacceptable.
|
Use case |
Reasonably |
Unacceptable |
|
Creating text |
While GenAI can help overcome initial writing difficulties or find definitions, its use must be accompanied by critical thinking and human judgment to ensure accuracy and originality. |
Using GenAI to generate new text, including paragraphs or even entire sections of an article, is ethically unacceptable. Academic text should be original and belong to human authors. |
|
Text translation |
This involves using GenAI to translate text from another language, such as English, or vice versa. |
Using GenAI to translate previously published work into another language without further editorial revision raises ethical concerns about self-plagiarism. |
|
Stylistic and linguistic improvement of sentences |
GenAI can be used to detect and correct grammatical errors, typos, and other language flaws, helping to improve clarity and professionalism. |
GenAI’s ability to process large amounts of text allows it to modify both individual sentences and entire paragraphs. Reworking entire paragraphs without human critical control and professional judgment can reproduce biases embedded in the training data and neutralize individual authorial style. |
|
Creating images |
GenAI can generate images based on text queries. This is only permissible if the main topic of the article is directly related to automatic image generation. |
The use of GenAI to create visual materials, including diagrams, graphs, and illustrations, is unacceptable. The generated output is often devoid of substantive correctness and reduces the quality, reliability, and scientific value of the articles. |
|
Rehash |
GenAI can help rephrase sentences or paragraphs to improve clarity, conciseness, or style. This can be useful for more precise and refined expression of thoughts. |
As with stylistic sentence improvement, paraphrasing without human control can reproduce biases from training data and weaken individual authorial style. |
Declaration on Generative AI
Authors are required to declare and describe in detail the specific contribution of any GenAI tools and services used in the preparation of their work. This ensures transparency and gives readers, reviewers, and editors of the scientific collection " Information Technology and Security " a clear understanding of the role that GenAI played in the creation of the published work.
The declaration must contain the following information:
- Tools and services: a complete list of all GenAI tools and services used, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and others;
- Tool Contribution: A precise description of the specific contribution made by each GenAI tool or service, classified according to the established GenAI Usage Taxonomy .
Example of declaration
During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used ChatGPT, Grammarly for the following purposes: checking grammar and spelling, paraphrasing and reformulating. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content to the necessary extent and bears full responsibility for the content of the publication.
